Water volleyball is one of the best forms of low impact, competitive sportexercises available to seniors. It is quite simply, volleyball played in a swimming pool with 5 feet or less of water. Only two requirements: you must be tall enough to maneuver through the water without assistance and swim well enough not to drown. No lifeguards on duty.
There are two different entities to the OR water volleyball club. One is the outdoors, played at the Island Club from April 1 through October 31. We play on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday from 3:00 to 5:30. Indoors is played at the Aquatic Center on Tuesday mornings 9:00 to 11:30 and again on Thursday evening 5:45 to 8:15, year round.
Our volleyball is affectionately known as Powder Puff games. Serves are easy, no spiking or slamming the ball. Players are asked to arrive 10-15 minutes before game time to be assigned to a team. New players are always welcome. If you don’t know how to play, we will teach you.
The camaraderie of the players is fun to watch. From our 92 year old flirting with the men (while getting in some awesome plays), to our overgrown “boys” taking the game so seriously, “sacrificing the body”. These “serious” players are invited, by a seasoned player, to try out for the Jungle Ball club the second Tuesday of each month at the Aquatic Center for some killer serves, slamming and spiking, and quick plays. Pretty intense!
